Impossibilities … God's Drum Roll
“It can’t be done,” she declared with a finality that was meant to silence my protests.
I was standing in an academic counselor’s office at our local community college with our twin girls, attempting to make some drastic changes in their schedule in order to accommodate their special needs. Because it was already two weeks into the semester, the counselor continued to stand her ground: “There’s no way. There’s not a professor out there who will agree to those changes. It can’t be done.”
I met her gaze and calmly replied, “I think it can be.”
With an exasperated sigh, she handed me the necessary forms.
It was Friday afternoon on a holiday weekend and our girls needed permission and signatures from four people in different departments. The forms had to be turned in by close of business that very day.
I had to admit, it certainly seemed impossible, and yet I kept sensing the Lord saying, “I will make a way where there seems to be no way . . . trust Me, Kelly . . . just watch and see.”
It was almost as if I could hear our Almighty God orchestrating a heavenly drum roll . . . inviting me to crane my neck and somehow gaze beyond the obstacles into the spectacular surprise He had in store for us.
Over the next few hours, we watched God part the Red Sea . . . just for us. As each obstacle was removed, God’s drum roll played on, building anticipation until the final cymbal crashed.
On that day, “It can’t be done” met the God who gets it done . . . the impossible was no more.
Grateful and full of praise, I was reminded of God’s words to the Israelites when they stood in that impossible place between the Red Sea and the approaching Egyptian army.
“Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you only need to be still.” (Exodus 14:13-14)
Can’t you just hear Him instructing His angelic orchestra: “Drum roll please . . ."
God could have delivered His people without all the drama, but then we would have missed out on this courage-building, powerful display of heavenly glory.
I wonder how many of us need to be reminded today that our Lord is a Warrior, not a wimp, and that His miraculous power is always at work, parting the seas in our own neighborhoods . . . in our own backyards.
What if we surrendered our fears and refused the temptation to manipulate people and circumstances and instead trusted that our Savior, the Lion of Judah, has already gone before us demolishing obstacles with each beat of His drum.
What would happen if we refused to wave the white flag of defeat in impossible situations and instead craned our hearts to hear God’s drum roll announcing His coming victory?
Drum roll please . . .
