The Answerer
We were halfway through our Courageous Faith Bible study when I asked the question, “How has God been speaking to you over the past six weeks?”
The answer I’ll never forget came from a dear friend, “For the first time I understand that I can talk to God about the things that break my heart, the things that don’t make sense and expect Him to speak to me about those situations.”
Even to this day, her tender, honest words stir deep places in my soul. I’m reminded of one of my favorite promises: “Call to me and I’ll answer you. I’ll tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own.” (Jeremiah 33:3 - The Message)
My greatest joy and deepest comfort in relationship with Jesus is that He is a Savior who speaks – personally, powerfully, and intimately. Jesus is never offended by our tough questions, overwhelmed by our emotions, or taken aback by our humanity.
Years ago, after sending our oldest daughter to a week-long Christian camp, I received a phone call that her cochlear implant had broken. She couldn’t hear, couldn’t participate in conversations, and couldn’t learn more about Jesus from the speakers. And to top it off, the last time her implant had broken had been while she was at another Christian camp a few summers before.
I ran to Jesus with my confusion. “Lord, why would You allow this to happen? It just doesn’t make any sense. It seems like You would want to take advantage of this opportunity for our daughter to learn more about You. This really hurts me and I need You to speak to me about it.”
Then I “heard” the still, small voice of The Answerer: “I Am Bigger than this.”
That was all … He didn’t offer me a detailed explanation about why He’d allowed this to happen … He simply washed away my confusion and anxiety with a fresh picture of His majesty, power, and intimate love. “Yes Lord, thank You that You are bigger than a broken cochlear implant.” Gratitude filled my heart as I pictured Him holding her in His universe-size hands and speaking directly into her spirit.
Aren’t you grateful that God’s ability to speak to us isn’t limited by our brokenness?
I wonder how many of us need to be reminded today that when Jesus went to the cross and gave His life for the broken, our names were on His heart. In the greatest love sacrifice of all times, He gave His all that we might have all of Him.
May we fall more deeply in love with Jesus as we trust Him to untangle our confusion, disperse our worried thoughts with His peace, and renew deeper hope in His goodness and faithfulness.
Would you pause right now, coming before Jesus with your tough questions and then embrace the Truth that Jesus, The Word, The Answerer, really is speaking and His Voice is for you.
